Can I get a debt consolidation loan?

Debt consolidation like many other types of loans have recently been difficult to obtain due to the impact of the credit crunch. The credit crunch basically has meant that banks are quite nervous when lending money to each other. The consequence of this has seen a tightening up of their lending criteria and taking less risks.

Figures from the Bank of England show that both unsecured and secured lending between April and July this year had fallen. However, there are signs which show that this situation has improved and that banks are more likely to give loans for various purposes, including debt consolidation. Optimistic signs are the BoE base rates has been falling and is expected to fall further and this reduction is being passed on to the debtors. This reduction would not be passed on unless the banks were being more confident about the future.

Should I use debt consolidation loan?

Debt consolidation is a very useful tool for those who have debt problems. The main purpose of debt consolidation is to reduce the monthly payments for servicing the debt by combining all your debts into one manageable loan. This can be done by either extending the length of repayment of the debt or by reducing the interest rates on the debt. Ideally you will want both but some people may have to compromise over this as they may find it difficult to get a cheap debt consolidation loan.

The three things which make a debt consolidation loan successful are, control over your spending, a commitment to reducing the debt and shopping about for the best deals. Have these three factors in place and you can be sure that your debts will disappear forever!
