Debt problems and mental health

Monday 18th August, 2008

A poll commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation revealed that 33% of people are reducing the number of times they see their friends due to financial problems. The charity is concerned about the impact debt problems have on the mental health of those struggling with their finances.

The poll also revealed that 80% have worries about their debt levels and two thirds are always thinking about their finances. The Mental Health Foundation also reveled that twice as many people aged 18-24 are stressed about the debts as those aged over 55 years.

The charity urges those people feeling the pinch not to just think that by spending less that things will improve. Spending less can help your debt problems but this can also lead to feelings of depression, anxiety and isolation. The Mental Heath Foundation suggests that people who are trying to cut back their finances should not cut themselves off from friends and socialising but rather find cheaper and inventive ways to do this. A walk in the park with friends or a game of football is a great way to relieve the pressure from burdening financial pressures.

Debtwatchodg echoes what the Mental Health Foundation has said. Many people see shopping or spending as their only social activity but there are many more healthier ways to socailise which does not have to involve money. Exploring different ways to socialise will not only improve your health but your finances as well!
