Store card problems

Sunday 30th December, 2007

This may not come as any surprise to any Debtwatchdog readers but a warning has been dished from Which? to stay clear of store cards which can plunge you into debt .

The consumer group has caution against using high interest store cards. Which spokesman warned that unless you are "very disciplined" in clearing the balance every month you should use other less expensive forms of credit.

The extent of the use of store cards was recently highlighted in a survey conducted by price comparison website uSwitch. The survey revealed that there were 16 million people with store cards owing approximately £2.2 billion.

Debtwatchdog believes that store cards are unfairly marketed. Persuading people to take out a store card giving by giving large discounts on goods is a rather underhand tactic. The store card providers know that they will easily make their money back from the exorbitant interest rate charges. This marketing tactic should be stopped.

If you have been a victim of store card marketing why not share your experiences, good or bad with our debt forum members. Debtwatchdog also encourages everyone to manage and understand their finances and debt problems by using our free Statement of Affairs tool.
